Chris Blackwell, fondateur du label Island Records, avait signé avec les Wailers au début des années 1970 et financé l'enregistrement de l'album «Catch a Fire» en Jamaïque. Bob Marley avait apporté des enregistrements non arrangés à Londres. Chris savait que le son rude des Wailers ne serait pas accepté par les stations de radio. Pour rendre l'album plus accessible, il décide d'ajouter des plages de claviers et de guitare électrique rock. Chris Blackwell et l'ingénieur du son Tony Platt font découvrir piste par piste la genèse de «Slave Driver», «Concrete Jungle», «Stir It Up» ou «Rock It Baby».
